For me, the exciting aspect of a mindfulness practice (or just mindset training in general) is that there is so much potential for improvement. As athletes we tend to focus on making small improvements with our nutrition, training, and technique in hopes of attaining big payoffs in competition, but often times the focus on improving our mindset is overlooked. Improving our ability to focus on the task at hand, not getting distracted by pain, fatigue, external and environmental factors, and the ability to bounce back from setbacks and mistakes (hello, resilience!) can have a huge impact on our overall performance, not to mention our ability to enjoy the process of training and competing.
Whether you struggle with performance anxiety, low self confidence, or just want to strengthen an already strong and focused mind, a mindfulness practice can help. One of the unique aspects of a mindfulness practice, compared to other sports specific “brain training” is that it overflows into all aspects of life. The concentration, resilience and emotion regulation (and hopefully gratitude) that you cultivate for your sport will positively effect your life and relationships outside of training.
A mindfulness practice won’t work, unless you do the work! It’s not always easy, but it can be so rewarding.
